Scott Family Amazeum Launches MakeHER Squad to Mentor, Support Girls in STEAM
Cognizant grant to support program
BENTONVILLE, Ark. (April 6, 2017) Girls lose interest in math and science as early as middle school without encouragement and support from mentors. This summer, the Scott Family Amazeum is introducing a program that will encourage girls to practice their STEAM skills while learning to mentor other girls as well.
Having a supportive environment and team around a young girl truly makes a difference when it comes to her not only believing in her abilities, but also in pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering, arts and math, said Mindy Porter, director of education at the Scott Family Amazeum. We can provide that environment here at the Amazeum.
Applications are now available on Amazeum.org for MakeHER Squad, a group of girls 14-18 years old who will spend the summer working on personal STEAM initiatives with educators at the Amazeum. MakeHER Girl Squad members will also mentor and help facilitate the girls only STEAM camp at the Amazeum in late July. During the camp, they will share their own learning journey with the campers and encourage them to continue dreaming big and making their own ideas become a reality.
Girls STEAM Camp: Dream Big will be held July 24-28 at the Amazeum and is open to girls ages 6-11. A few seats remain and registration is available at Amazeum.org by choosing Camps from the Events & Programs menu. Amazeum members receive a discount.
MakeHER Girl Squad and Girls STEAM Camp are possible via Cognizants Making the Future initiative and managed through Vanguard Charitable. All Amazeum summer camps are presented by BIC Corporation.
We are so fortunate to be in a region that supports initiatives to bring more women into scientific fields and encourages them to follow that passion. We know that by providing support, resources, and mentoring opportunities, we can help to make that road more possible for all young girls, said Amazeum Executive Director Sam Dean.
